Bias alert 1: I normally eschew - with a vengeance - anything that has 'calico' or 'hobby' or 'cozy' or 'nook' in the name, just on general crabby-ass principle. Bias alert 2: I am notoriously picky about breakfast, because it is so freaking cheap to make that I really really resent having to pay much of anything more than a buck fifty for a coupla eggs over easy and some hot Joe. I almost never feel like it's been worth what I've paid. So I almost never eat breakfast outside of my own kitchen. But last weekend when we stayed at the Skagit Bay Hideaway (OMG, check it out) and didn't pack any breakfast food (the Hideaway is awesome, but no longer a B&B, so... no B for us!), we needed someplace to fuel up so Russell wouldn't keel over from low blood sugar on the drive home. (He has a HIGH metabolism.) Checked out the menu here because there are not that many breakfast joint options in La Conner. Noticed that they serve EGG WHITES ONLY. This is a huge point for Russell, so we checked it out, and were very very happy! Good plain American-style coffee, served in a classic diner mug, topped up automatically without me having to ask. Real milk in a little metal jug. R's glass of orange juice was BIG. He ordered his eggs whites, bacon, and fried potatoes a la carte from the sides selections - and the efficient, pleasant waitress steered him toward "The Fisherman," which is the same thing, only with toast, and more bacon, for less money! Big points already. It was a good meal, too. Nicely crisp potatoes, 4 slices of good bacon, bread for the toast from their bakery, excellent jam, local eggs, yum. I got the biscuits and gravy. Let me rephrase that. I got THE BISCUITS AND GRAVY THAT THEY SERVE IN HEAVEN. Large ironstone plate, warmed. Atop it, a hot, fresh, perfectly-light-on-the-inside and golden-crispy-on-the-outside biscuit, right out of the oven, split into two surprisingly large halves, lavished with milky gravy that was not too thin and not at all gooey/thick, studded with nice big proper discrete pieces of excellent fried sausage - not tiny amorphous crumbles like many places serve. With it, two farm-fresh local eggs, over easy. (BTW - $6.99 without the eggs, $8.99 with the eggs. Nice price!) But more important than the price is that it was PERFECT. To die for. SOOOOO very good! The fresh tender biscuit. The savory creamy gravy. The porky goodness of the sausage. The flavor-packed egg yolks, bright orangey-yellow and velvety and delicious and.... Thunk. Falls over in food delirium. The end.

This little place is absolutely delicious! I ordered the breakfast quesadilla and it was to die for! I totally suggest this place to anyone looking for a scrumptious farm to table breakfast! :)

This place was really nice. I got the chicken burrito and it was to die for and them my mom got the squash hash and loved it. For dessert I got the chocolate silk pie and my mom took a bite but ended up eating about half of it she liked it so much. There was a lot of options that all looked good and the staff was very friendly. I would definitely recommend it!!

YUM! This is probably the best pancake I have ever had! My husband got the shrimp and avocado omelette. We were both very happy and the service was great. Will definitely be back if we're ever in the area.

Bleck! Wishing I could leave negative stars because of the lousy food & service here! Condesceding youth at their best! Unfortunately, I came back to Calico Cupboard today after many years of not coming to LaConner. We remembered it being better. Well, I was so wrong. Lesson learned. Never again. Here I am with my story. Lucky YOU! ;) Today my sis & I went here for lunch. I asked the server for thoughts on the salmon scramble or the breakfast burrito. She said, "I'm no help. I like them both." So, I got the salmon scramble. When it arrived, it was awful! I told her I don't like it (and I have never returned a dish because it was disgusting, this was a first for me), I asked if I could try the burrito instead. At this point, we're fine. She takes my plate & wanders the dining room, with it in hand, talking to other patrons. Whatever. Just get me a burrito. Right? Pretty simple. Well, next, she comes back, 10 minutes later...with my gross scramble off the plate and JUST my cold potatoes & toast (I knew it was my toast, because I had taken 2 bites). Yes folks, she returned my cold potatoes & toast to me! At that point, I am DONE. I get up (not to make a scene in the dining room) & go to the front "greeter" person & ask for a manager. I speak quietly to the manager about it & tell her I don't want the burrito & we will pay for my sister's food & be done. The manager agrees. Again, I think I am done. My server then shows up with the burrito ! I tell her I'd spoken to the manager & I don't want it. This girl proceeds to pretty much ram that burrito down my throat, "I can put it in a box for you to take, since we made it for you!" I agreed but tell her, I REALLY don't want it. She comes back with the check & a burrito to go (that I don't want) & I get charged for that stupid scramble!!! I tell her I wasn't paying for it & she says, "Well, you didn't like it, so, we made you more food. We made you two things. I told you to get the breakfast burrito but you chose the salmon scramble & people really like that." What the heck? First rule of business....the customer is ALWAYS right. Not sometimes right, not when you feel like you're right & they are wrong. They are always right. So, I tell her that I do not want to pay for the scramble, she keeps pushing me, afterall, they replaced their disgusting salmon scramble with a burrito I did not want & told the manager not to have made for me! We pay for it all, with the server & I went right back to the lobby....got that same manager, told her we want a refund of MY food (we were willing to pay for the two iced teas & my sister's food) and she finally refunded it. I did NOT take the burrito with me that they boxed up. I didn't want it. I was very clear about this with the manager! Save yourself the hassle folks...I am certain there are better options out there. This place does not put customer satisfaction first. In my humble opinion, that young gal who served us was only following what her manager wanted her to do. I'm sure the manager told her to pressure me to pay. Not only did I feel that young girl was very condescending to me (when I was pretty darn nice considering the whole series of events) but the food was NOT good. On the way out of town, I got a bag of Cheetos & a Dr. Pepper for the one hour trip back south, to my home! (Thanks to the friendly little grocery store that is on the road...wish I knew the name, I'd give that gal rave reviews for being so friendly! Even SHE said the food at Calico really hasn't been as good as it used to be and she's a local.) There you have it!

I went yesterday with my family and was very disappointed in this place. So many good reviews, which is why we decided to try it. Our first impression was good. It was very crowded, which I took as a good sign. The wait was not very long, and when we were seated we lucked out and got a great table outside. The problem was the long wait for our food - we waited for half an hour before the server told us it would be 10 more minutes at the most. 10 more minutes went by and we noticed that other parties who had arrived after us were getting their food. The server was apologetic and offered us free bread and salad. I will say that the food is good. Finally after we had been waiting for about an hour, my sons really wanted to leave, but I asked the server if we could speak to the manager and I told her that I think our lunch should be free. Our lunch finally arrived, but the manager never came to speak to us. At that point I wasn't surprised that he/she never came. Our lunch ended up being free and they offered free cookies, which we accepted, and the food was good, but I will never go back.

We had pretty solid chowder and cinnamon roll. Coffee was lame. I want a no table service option where I an order from the counter and sit where I want. Our service (that we didn't want anyway) was crummy.

This place is so yummy! My daughter and I went here last Saturday for breakfast and we were amazed by the great tasting fresh food. All their ingredients are locally sourced and their baked good are homemade, need I say more? When you enter the restaurant you sign your self in with the number that are in your party and whether you want a table or counter space. They seat you on a first come first serve basis. We both had a two egg breakfast with whole wheat toast and diced potato's. The eggs tasted like the chickens just laid them, they were that fresh and actually had flavor! The bread had seeds and all sorts of whole wheat goodness in it and the potato's were seasoned with fresh herbs a little bit of onion and were delish! The people that sat next to us were eating this giant cinnamon roll that looked divine but neither my daughter or I could even think about ordering one of those after the breakfast we just ate. The place was packed the entire time we were there and seemed to be a local favorite. I would highly recommend that if you are in LaConner or Mt Vernon that you stop on in and grab a bite to eat, you won't regret it!

Whenever I'm in the Skagit Valley for tulip or trumpeter swan viewing, I always stop by Calico Cupboard for lunch. It's consistently served the freshest, healthiest and most tasty sandwiches and salads. Everything tastes home made. The service is always fast and very friendly. You must make room for dessert and get some delectable morsel from their bakery next door. It's definitely worth making a special trip to La Conner! A few notes....they don't start serving lunch until 11:20.. and wifi only works up against the wall on the bakery side...

If you are wandering around Whidbey Islands and taking in the scenic Deception Pass bridge, make time for breakfast at Calico Cupboard. The decor was charming, our waitress was friendly and the food was delicious. We started by sharing their cinnamon roll ( we stuck with the traditional). YUM! Then my husband andI shared the blueberry pancakes ( yes, that is real maple syrup they serve with them) and an omelet ( peppers, mushrooms, cheese - oh my!) After some other good but not great stops on Whidbey, this was the highlight of our culinary delights. ( With the possible exception of the Whidbey Pie Company). Bonus - this location is in the middle of a cute shopping district. : )

In the quaint, small-town setting of La Conner, Calico Cupboard seems like a decent option for baked goods or a filling breakfast/lunch. It also, however, seems like one of the town's only options, which explains so much. We decided to stop by here for lunch on a pre-(week before)Tulip Festival trip to the area. Judging by the massive crowd outside, cute interior and glowing reviews on Yelp, it seemed like a sure bet. After waiting OVER AN HOUR outside in the cold to get a table for three people - they don't accept reservations - I began to think otherwise. Once we successfully completed the obstacle course of umbrellas, strollers, legs, feet, chairs, servers, elephants (just kidding), we were seated in a corner, inches away from the surrounding tables and their conversations. Because the place was packed to capacity (or more), it was really loud, and service was pain-stak-ing-ly slow, as in some of the slowest service I've ever encountered. After waiting about 25 minutes, our orders were taken; another 25 minutes later, we finally received our food. I ordered the Scrambled Eggs with Cream Cheese and Smoked Salmon. The portion was fairly large, and came with toast. Unfortunately, the salmon was really dry. Certainly not $11.49 good. (There's a mean Salmon Scramble served in the $$ Napa Valley that's a few dollars cheaper and a million times better.) Others in my group thought their entrees were just "ok." To salvage the disaster that was our lunch, we stopped by the enticing bakery and picked up a few chocolate chip cookies and other baked goods. They were tasty, very tasty - easily 4-stars worthy. The Calico Cupboard has much potential. Institute a reservation system, adhere to maximum capacity requirements, increase quality control and knock down prices a few bucks, and you'd have a restaurant that could make it in a town with actual competition. But because La Conner is what it is, Calico Cupboard is A-OK.

I had a roast beef sandwich with Swiss cheese, grilled onions, and horseradish on sourdough. There were grilled onions inside and on top of the sandwich, looped around the toothpick holding the top and bottom together. That might be a bit too much onion but they are easily removed, or you could order without the extras on top. The tarragon in the clam chowder was a distinctive touch. It looks like their baked goods might be worth indulging in but I didn't get anything this trip. The atmospere is cozy and a tad rustic, and the music seemed like adult alternative or something. I heard Joan Osborne and Eddie Vedder's ukelele album.

I love this place! Delicious food, gluten-free options including house-made bread, all gluten-free items are well-marked on the menu and there are tons of them. They're happy to customize a dish to make it dairy-free for me. The bakery has something for everyone. Be sure to take home a loaf of bread!

Mmmm....toffee bar....still thinking about it a day later. We were wandering around the town after a disappointing lunch at La Conner brewing when we came across Calico Cupboard...with a huge line coming out the door. We spied the bakery case inside and were delighted with just how yummy everything looked! Our group of 4 got two toffee bars, one coconut cream pie and one peanut butter pie. But, decisions were tough and just about anything looked amazing. The toffee bar was tasty - it reminded me of a hello dolly bar with just a slightly different layering method. The coconut cream pie was devoured even before we were done paying and the peanut butter pie was divine. Definitely a nice little bakery to stop in for a treat. Next time I'm in town, I'll certainly wait in line for lunch - or at least grab a yummy looking cinnamon roll to go!

Whenever we visit La Conner, we try to have lunch at the Calico Cupboard. Their breads are all made from scratch, so even the hamburgers taste extra-special, on the homemade buns. The salads are great and fresh, as are the sandwiches. Last time here, my kid and I shared an open-faced tuna melt and the clam chowder (which was fantastic!), while hubby raved about his black and blue burger. We were too full for desserts, unfortunately, but we drooled over the display case full of goodies. Oh, the bread pudding was calling my name! It looked so good, as did the lemon bars and huge cookies! I guess they'll have to wait for next time....!

This place is always busy and you have to wait for a seat. My expectations were very high given the wait and the delicious baked goods you stare at while waiting for your seat. I had the southwest quiche...not good. The crust was delicous but the rest of teh quiche was very bland. I thought southwest would have flavor. My wife enjoyed her turkey pot pie. The mushrooms were sauteed and the sauce was very light but still flavorful and rich. Only white meat turkey was used. The crust was wonderful. Her vegetable soup with beans and beef was awful. It was worse than hormel chilli. Some dishes were terrific. Two were crap. Averages out at a 3-star review. We ordered snicker doodle and ginger snap cookies. Snicker doodle didn't taste fresh. Ginger snap was great.

The food is so delicious! We had a party of five so we had to wait a little bit for a larger table to open. Most of their tables seat 2 to 4. I had the mushroom bacon quiche and a cup of soup. I would say it was the best quiche I've had in a restaurant in years. The clam chowder was smooth and velvety. Others in my party had sandwiches, salads, etc. All loved their meal. We ended with ordering two of their gigantic cinamon rolls and sharing. Sooooo good!!! I would definitely return when I'm back in Seattle visiting family. My sister is already planning to go back with a girlfriend of hers.

I love this cafe - it is my favorite place to go when I am in need of comfort food and I am sad that I moved away. I do try to eat here when I come and visit my parents though. They have to best clam chowder. Usually I will go with just a soup and salad since they have wonderful raspberry vinaigrette and it comes with fresh baked bread as well. They also have a huge selection of sandwiches as well - the turkey, cream cheese and cranberry sauce is one of my favs. They also have pastries that you can order to go. The cinnamon buns are to die for! My favorite are the raspberry ones. It can be very busy on the weekends so you might have to wait a bit but it is well worth it.

Honest eats from the creamy clam chowder to the hearty ham sandwich. But the real treat was the strawberry shortcake make with local berries. For those of you who have never had berries from Skagit Valley - what are you waiting for?! We aren't talking those California berries with a white core (or worse yet a hollow center), these babies are small, blood red in color, and as sweet as candy. The calico cupboard treats these local gems, like everything else - nothing fancy just simply good. If the day is sunny, ask to sit on the deck out back and watch the boats go by.

This is a review of breakfast. I love their menu selection...interesting variety. Their coffee drinks are TO DIE FOR. Visiting from CA, I really envy the coffee culture in the Pac-NW...drive-up espresso all over the place, and good tasting to boot! Anyway, the bakery was super tempting. The cookies were great, also the croissant was amazing! Definitely recommend.

This is one of three with another in Mount Vernon and the main bakery in Anacortes plus Seeds Bistro in La Conner owned by Linda F. and having met her mother in law after many visits I learned a bit about her. restaurants. Check out their web page and look at the pictures to become a fellow believer. Great bakery menu of sandwiches, salads, soups, breakfasts and bakery stuff. Flax seed bread makes great sandwiches, absolutely HUGE Cinnamon rolls. Try the raspberry cinnamon roll but plan to share it cause it almost covers a modest dinner plate! The better half loves the gingerbread men. Un iced but tasty. Cookies are about 7 inches large like most of their goodies. Sticky buns, lemon squares all big enough to share....if you decide to. Spinach salad is also one of my boss lady's faves. Every time we visit we try something new. It will be awhile until we run out of choices. Prices are reasonable and half sandwiches are available. Definitely a place for those with a sweet tooth. On weekends you will wait but hey places with lines? What does that say about the place? About the reservation thing mentioned by another reviewer...If you were waiting in the cold and saw empty tables being held for late arriving reservations would you be - Happy? Angry? Frustrated? Servers are smiley and friendly and usually timely and polite. It's a folksy kind of place in the country so don't expect the Seattle high end restaurant experience. Are they perfect? Close but remember that consistency is an .800 batting average even at the best of times at the best restaurants. I know, I've managed restaurants for 30 years. This makes me focus on the positive aspects in my reviews cause.....been there done that. Here's the deal. We live 55 miles away and we've been numerous times so how good does a place need to be to drive that far? For us it's a day trip that includes a stop at the the CO OP market in Mount Vernon with great wine specials and an organic produce rack that will make your dinner mucho delish. La Conner shops and galleries beg to be shopped. The farm stands in the area during the summer are a great bonus too.

I give 5 out of 5 stars for the bakery and 3 out of 5 stars for the restaurant. So I averaged to a 4/5 stars. The bakery is to die for. I never have a hard time deciding on treats, except here. Today I was torn between 4 types of cinnamon rolls, giant cream puffs, amazing peanut butter bars, lemon bars and my childhood favorite ginger bread men. I got my self a lemon bar ( didn't last the car ride) and my husband a giant cinnamon rolls. Yummy. I had breakfast here earlier in the day. The lady who seated us came off sort of snotty. We arrived at about 10:30. Perfect timing, it was still breakfast time but between the breakfast and lunch rush. I ordered eggs Benedict ( which I always order everywhere). It came on a biscuit and didn't have enough sauce hollandaise sauce. I asked for a little bit on the size and I was brought at soup cup filled with it. ( I was a little bummed out to realize I was charged $3.00 for it, when I only used a few spoonfuls). My mom's scramble was wonderful and we left happy. Come right at 11:20 if you want lunch, that is when the breakfast menu ends, It was 1:00 when we stopped back by to get our bakery items and there were 20 people on the waiting list.

Came in an hour before closing (spring hours open until 4pm) so pastry case was pretty sparse. Still managed to claim (and devour) the last raspberry cinnamon roll and a turkey brioche sandwich (delicious). We'll be back in the morning for breakfast in the seating area (with waitress service), as recommended by Katy's Inn.

Excellent Pastries! The quality and flavor is amazing! Today we shared the chocolate chunk cookie (decadent as fudge), turkey brioche and ham and cheese croissant. It was the meatiest, best ham & cheese croissant I have ever tasted! I would give them only 4 stars due to how expensive it is (4.95 for croissant, 5.50 for brioche, 1.85 for cookie), but any place in this adorable little town gets an extra star for location! 8-30 went there for brunch today in the cafe. My daughter had Mac N Cheese that was just like I make at home, but perfect. It was so creamy and cheesy. She had to fight me for it. My husband & I shared a fisherman's breakfast. We were both stuffed afterwards. Their breakfast potatoes are seasoned very well, but could have been cooked longer. The bisquit tasted amazing, but had been grilled and had a strong oil flavor that took away from the overall bisquit experience. Coffee was just ok.

We were in the area and decided to have lunch at Calico Cupboard. Like another reviewer, I would give the restaurant 3 starts and the bakery 5 stars...thus getting an average of 4 stars. While my sandwich was pretty tasty, it seemed a bit steep to charge $11 for a normal size sandwich, a pickle spear and some chips. Hubby had the grilled veggie sandwich and he complained that it was too oily? buttery? After lunch we perused the case of baked goods and decided on the lemon doodle cookie, which is about the size between a salad plate and a dinner plate and a peanut butter chocolate bar. YUM!!

Long wait (tulip festival time) and this place was packed. Service was friendly, food was great. The homemade potato bun on my roast beef dip was perfection. Everything on the menu sounded good and was reasonably priced. I think I gained weight looking at the bakery counter. Only downside is that is can be hot when crowded, and they really pack people in - 5-6 at a table that should really seat 4.

This review is long overdue by about 8 years. The first time I ate here (2001) I had just taken ownership of an Italian motorcycle (Aprilia Mille), and this was the first eating destination before we hit Chuckanut Drive on our way up to Vancouver, BC. I will never forget the first time here, because it just so happened to be the first time I ate clam chowder in a sour dough bread bowl (that, and I managed to talk our ultra hot server into dating me for a season -another story). OMG. Whenever I eat in La Conner this is one of three places I try to get into -with this place holding first dibs. Great pastries, cookies, salads, sandwiches, breakfasts and brunch. It's all fantastic!

So good! I had a tasty omelette - bacon, avocado and cheese - and my husband enjoyed his cinnamon roll french toast. But their cinnamon roll was SO good, that I'm wondering when I can make it back to La Conner.

it amazes me everytime i travel in the Pacific NW & discover an itty bitty town with a few itty bitty restaurants or bakeries that serve honest, good-tasting, top quality food & appreciate the passion and discerning nature of the owners as well as townspeople/tourists that patronize such places and consider myself lucky to be living in the Pacific NW. Calico Cupboard in La Conner is one such place i discovered lately & as promised by Travel & Leisure, they had delicious, made from scratch local food. their berry lemonade was to die for & so was their veggie hash (i asked for 2 scrambled eggs on top). portions were rather large so only regret was there was no room left for a sweet ending to our lovely lunch.

I've eaten here a few times and love it. Today was my favorite experience since it was so beautiful and we were able to sit out on the water. There were groups of Swinomish children paddling in races across from us. I loved the fish tacos.

La Conner is one of my favorite "get out of town" destinations and the Calico Cupboard on the waterfront serves very fine and tasty breakfasts and lunches. On a weekend in the summer it gets a bit crowded, but on a gray February weekday morning the ambience is mellow with smooth jazz and acoustic music in the background. This morning I had the Greek Scramble and a huge Triple Berry Muffin. Very tasty. Please stop in if you're in La Conner.

I have eaten here before for years and although it's pricey for a veg sandwich I drove my wife over to La Connor to this cafe to give them my business. All restuarants in this area close at 3 PM on weekdays so when we arrived at 2:30 PM and saw the open sign on the door and a man sitting at a table with a paper and the waitress standing, I happily held the door open for my wife and we went inside. Immediatey the waitress told my wife that the "cash register was closed" Because Business was Slow. ?! My wife said that we drove all the way from I-5 to eat there and asked to speak to the manager. Then the bald head customer who was reading & drinking coffe began shouting "Lady get out of here" and "Stop your bitching". The waitress took no action to our verbal abuse assault and we departed while there was a brief lull in the profanity when I mentioned of calling the police. When I told this story to my brother, he said that one afternoon the waiitress "Allowed" them to eat only if they ate outside on the deck when they arrived at 2 PM.

I've ordered the same sandwich three times in the last month or so (at two different locations). The first time, my socks were blown off. Delicious! The second time, they forgot something essential. Same with the third time. For $13/sandwich, there's little excuse to forget things. The attention to detail is lacking. I will give it one more try because the food is so good, but I'm not willing to keep spending that kind of money if they don't train their staff well enough to build sandwiches. If you order out, be mindful and check your order before you leave.

This place is awesome! The food has never disappointed and the service is excellent. If the weather is decent, they have a patio area out back and you can dine waterfront. The coconut shortbread is amazing!

Even if you don't have time to stop in, check out the bakery and order a cinnamon roll (it's worth it). I especially love this place since our last visit. My boyfriend and I took a day trip from Seattle up to Whidbey and stopped in La Conner for breakfast. It was a chilly day, but we hoped the patio would be open since we had our dog with us. Unfortunately, it was not open, but they saw we had our dog and offered to serve us "to go" style on the patio. We still were given silverware, and were able to enjoy the view of the channel all by ourselves. It ended up being a perfect breakfast, and a great start to our day. They can be quite busy, but the food is worth the wait. Friendly staff and great service.

We came here for lunch on a beautiful late summer-early fall Saturday. The cafe was crowded, but we were seated very quickly. I strongly recommend the hot raspberry cider, it was delectable. My husband was happy with his omelet and fruit plate, but I was let down by my turkey pot pie. Though the crust was nice and flaky, and the gravy seasoned nicely, there was almost no turkey in it. I had been hoping for some plump, moist chunks, but there was probably less than one cubic inch of turkey altogether. A word of warning, too... the balsamic dressing has bleu cheese in the vinaigrette, so if you don't like bleu cheese, you may want to ask about that. We left with a cinnamon roll from their baked goods. They have several cinnamon roll varieties, and we went with the traditional. Though the icing is nice, creamy yet slightly gritty from sugar, and sweet, the roll itself was a bit tough.

I had never been to Ana Cortes and was pleasantly surprised when we drove through to hop the ferry to Orcas Island. We had rolled into town early and were hungry so we decided to stop here b/c it was the first non fast food place we came upon. The inside is decorated like a family kitchen complete with dining tables you'd find in anyone's home growing up. I felt very at home by all of this. I ordered the veggie Benedict on a croissant and hash browns. And I have to say it was one of the best breakfasts I'd had in a long time. The croissant was toasted to perfection, the hollandaise sauce was sweet/sour/buttery just as it should be and the veggies were to die for. My friend ordered the biscuits and gravy and it came complete with homemade biscuits that were big and flavorful. If I'm ever back up in the area I'm definitely stopping back by.

Great for soup and salad. Their Bleucheese burger was good but has a bit of spice. Overall a bit bland. Out of a party of 3, two were very happy with their meal

I love La Connor but part of the reason I love to come here is to have lunch at this restaurant. The Old Town Lunch is my favorite, but everything I have had here is great. Most important though, is leave room for dessert! (or take one home with you.) Great old building, helpful and cheerful staff, and satisfying food followed by a stroll around picturesque La Connor. Doesn't get much better than this!

Delicious breakfast. Crowded and busy, but worth the wait. Very country feeling. Super friendly service.

First of all, the Calico has the edge when it comes to early breakfast, because, as far as I could tell, it is the only restaurant (coffee shops don't count) that serves breakfast before 10:30, which is a huge advantage. Who in Hell wants to eat breakfast at 10:30? Most hotels have a check-out time of 11:00 a.m., so if you don't start breakfast until 10:30 you darn well better check out of your hotel first. If you are not a tourist then this review doesn't pertain to you. Anyway, the Calico serves delicious breakfasts, and much of the menu is, for the most part, unique for this restaurant, and the portions are quite generous. Don't pay too much heed to those reviewers who complain about the prices. The prices are only about a buck or two above other restaurants, and if the food is a step above, then it's definitely worth it. Those who complain strictly about price are either cheapskates (#1 reason) or look for anything to complain about first. Those complainers can find a Denny's if they are so cheap. The service is also fine, although it can get crowded after about 9:00, and there can sometimes be only one server, but I tend to be a patient customer anyway.

Stopped by for the first time today after touring the tulip fields. Being Easter Sunday, I expected a wait; we ended up sitting at the front window which was nice to have your back to the "din" of a packed restaurant. Once seated, our order was taken right away; I had the Easter special: shrimp and artichoke quiche with cup of asparagus soup and my son ordered grilled ham and provolone (half) - no chips! :( and cup of clam chowder. The special came with a hot cross bun which we shared. A glass of lemonade for me, he stuck with water and the bill was over $28 before tip, which is kinda pricey, but it is a "tourist town" and I didn't expect differently. Our wait for the food wasn't too long (less than for the seat!) and the waitress was kind and friendly. The meal was delicious, very rich soups, the quiche was light but loaded with shrimp and the sandwich melty and satisfying. After reading these reviews I wish we had perused the bakery case and taken something special home, but alas we did not! Next time, however... I will know!!

I bought my wedding dress in La Conner and had to travel out here several times for fittings. Each time I introduced another member of my family to Calico Cupboard. This place is so cute! The walls are covered with cute sayings such as "Chocolate is a food group". This place is packed with tourists on any sunny weekend. The breakfasts are big and satisfying. Service can be a bit slow. I always stop by the bakery on the way out to pick up some pastries to go. The silk pie was especially delicious:)

  • AC A.

I had breakfast here with my husband and mother-in-law. The pastries looked good, but we ordered off the menu. I had the Huevos Rancheros and I knew it would be a bistro spin-off of the Mexican version, but their version was way off. The beans were probably out of a can, the sauce was bland (and nothing like Mexican ranchero sauce), and the tortillas - well, there weren't any! The bill for the three of us was about $30.00 before tip - a bit pricey for breakfast.

The food is still awesome and the huge cinnamon roll for under $5 is my favorite thing ever. The coffee was great this time if you like a dark French style roast which I do! It is a little pricey at around $2.50 for a cup of regular coffee. Unfortunately the service was pretty bad. We had to wait after being seated almost ten minutes until someone asked if we wanted anything to drink. It wasn't even busy yet. One of the servers wasn't super friendly but another who was helping us was. Communication between servers wasn't very good because we got asked the same questions by different people ("can I take your order" when ours had been taken already) I will be coming back again even though the service wasn't very good. Love dat gooey bun.

So, I just wanted a coffee and a slice of pie so I tried to order at the counter. The nice young lady behind the counter hinted that we should take a seat, and the wait staff did say that they don't like the counter "stealing" tips from them. A host might have strongly directed outside and left us there for 10 minutes without returning. I thought it was strange that they wanted tips and left us to sit. It wasn't that busy. We came back in to order and the place was clearing out so we just ordered at the counter, coffee and a slice of pie, $10.49. Since the nice lady behind the counter was helpful and was hustling I did tip her. Maybe she does "steal" the tips by actually serving the customers. Since the restaurant was nearly empty, we just sat by the window so my son could eat his pie and the waitstaff told us we couldn't sit there, "This is for dine in customers only." So... WE LEFT! It wasn't a very good experience and truthfully the wait staff didn't deserve a tip. We literally got zero service from them. The people that were next to us also spent a lot of money and got treated the exact same way. I will not be going back ever.

We stopped there this morning, and I had the vegetarian scramble (with feta). It was really good! Very good flavor, and just all around YUMMY! They also have very good decaf coffee. We will most certainly be repeat customers when we come through again!

Terrible rude personnel. We stopped off when boating to get some old town food and tea. They weren't taking our orders, for a long time. AND they placed us in the back outside behind the restaurant. Where no waitress comes. So we walked back inside and went too order again. Asked for the frozen baked goods to be warmed up. We got them still very cold. Don't go here is your want good service. The hostess was really mean. We finally got our food and went too sit down on the counters. The hostess came up too us and told us we could not sit there. Six of us for up ands left. I had hot soup Anna tea. I had to eat out on the sidewalk. Never go here. Expensive and bad service

A cute little bakery and cafe on La Conner's strip of shops and dining on the waterfront. For diner-style breakfast or lunch, it's a solid place. When you walk in, you'll see the bakery counter first, and the main dining area is in a separate room behind it. There's also outside dining available, weather permitting. We had a pretty big group and they were helpful with pushing tables together to make a mega-table for all of us to sit together. The menu is pretty basic: soups, sandwiches, and salads, plus the goodies from the bakery. Breakfast items are mainly scrambles and hashes. I had the WA turkey sandwich (turkey grilled with Havarti cheese, cream cheese, cranberries, Dijon mustard and red onion) with soup. You won't be blown away by anything new and innovative here, but the portions were generous and the food is good. Their baked goods are kind of pricey, but then again they're also HUGE, especially their crazy cinnamon rolls. The lemon bars are delicious! If you're not ready for a full meal or you just want a sweet treat, stop in and check out their bakery case.

This place was so cozy and cute! Perfect casual dining! Pros They bake their own bread so their sandwiches are great (friend got chicken club on focaccia and loved it) I got the pot pie - the crust was nice and crisp and not too thick, generous amount of turkey and veggies inside! They split the bill for us!!! Cons Place is small so probably expect a short wait. Parking is difficult but there's a public paid lot around the corner for $3 all day

One of the best breakfasts I've ever had. Service was very friendly but the restaurant was quite busy and food was slow to come out. We sat inside but the deck seating looked lovely. We will definitely return.

I'm trying to think of something to complain about, but I got nothing. There was no wait, we were seated immediately, we were given a cup of coffee really quick after asking for it, the menu options was just full of things I wanted to try, I ended up ordering the Popeye, with a side order of one of there famous cinnamon rolls. Everything came out after a short wait, and it was delicious. The wait staff was really friendly, and my coffee was never empty (which I really like). The cinnamon roll was really REALLY good. Thick, gooey sweet cinnamon awesomeness. We will be back to try something else.

ask price before you buy. we bought 2 slices of pie (homemade, about 1/8 of a whole pie). each was crammed into a togo container that was too small. then came the real shock. $14 plus tax. that is the cost of a whole pie nearly everywhere else. this is La Conner, not NYC. we WILL NOT be ripped off as naive tourists again. watch your wallets!

This is a top notch restaurant. We came for lunch and had an outdoor table on the canal. I ordered the artichoke and Gorgonzola quiche with a salad while my husband had the turkey and cranberry sandwich with a bowl of creamy clam chowder. We even shared a cinnamon roll with our coffee before lunch. All was delicious and the service was fantastic. We will be visiting again on our next trip to LaConner.

First of all, I would love to try the cinnamon roll here - however, breakfast was so big, there was no room left! Came on a Monday morning in April, so it was quiet - may get busy during the season, but we enjoyed a quiet, Monday breakfast. Portions were large, jam tasted homemade and overall it was a great place for a cozy, morning meal.

The salad was fresh and the sandwich was good. The clam chowder was awful. It tasted like it was full of corn meal - NO clams, not even a smell of clams. We waited for 25 minutes for the food even though the restaurant wasn't full. I love the Calico Cupboard in Mount Vernon much better.

I surprisingly really enjoyed my trip to the Calico Cupboard. When I walked in, I thought it was a place for old ladies, but I found everything to be really enjoyable. I had the clam chowder with a huge hunk of bread, both were incredible, I don't think I've had fresh bread like that. As a desert, my girlfriend and I split a crème puff, which I typically would never have but since it was her birthday I indulged. I'm glad I did, it was massive but it was delicious. I would go back.

First time here and came here because of the good reviews but can we get some service please? I'm guessing because it's nice outside and Fathers Day crowd made it busier than usual but we've been waiting for over 15-minutes and no server. See several tables next to me also waiting. See plenty of staff walking around. They seem nice but lacking in purpose. Most of the time they go straight to one table but don't bother to look around to see if other tables needed service (poor or no training?). Waited for over 20-minutes and finally had to flag someone for coffee and water. *Sigh* The locals say the food is good so I'm giving two stars for the decor and general niceness of the staff but zero stars for lack of service. One suggestion is to always have an empty coffee mug and water glass at each table. Take it away if a customer doesn't order it in the beginning. This way your refill person can just refill without having to become a server and carry many full cups to the table. So.. As I wrap this up its been about 40-minutes and we've seen our waitress once and no food. We ordered a cinnamon roll from the bakery and still waiting for it. The four tables next to me are in a similar situation. UPDATE: Just had two locals from two different tables who saw that we were waiting for a long time tell me that there is a huge party out on the deck and it's normally not this slow. So. I'm bumping them up to four stars because the food is good.

Couldn't be happier. I came to La Conner 10 years ago and had the best coconut pancakes with homemade buttermilk syrup here. We couldn't remember the name of the cafe where we'd had this amazing breakfast 10 years ago and walked around town for 30 minutes looking for it. We finally got to calico and asked the nicest woman about the breakfast and it turned out we were in the right place but breakfast wasn't being served any longer. After I told her about my 10 year gap and searching for the cafe she asked the cooks if they'd make the pancakes for me and they did. Just as great as I remembered and wonderful service to top it off. Do stop by, you will be so glad you did!

The raspberry apple cider was excellent food was great. I ended the meal with the toffee bar which was good but dense so be ready to share dessert or take it to go in a box. We sat on the patio though it was a bit chilly the view of the water was beautiful and the food good. You definitely don't want to miss this gem. Not far from the tulips.

I would give 4 stars to the food - it's good, hearty breakfast fare with fresh ingredients and ample portions. But I have to give the service, which overrode the positivity of the food, only 3 stars. We visited around noon yesterday, a Sunday. We were happy to be seated quickly, but from there the service level plummeted. There appeared to be an overabundance of wait staff which hindered anybody from actually doing anything. Apparently only certain people can do certain things, eg one gal who can only replenish water and coffee, and another gal who can only clear plates. We waited a long time to have our order of 2 breakfast entrees filled. And while we understand the power went out and were impressed that they were able to cook the orders regardless, the food did come out cold and after quite a wait. The most frustrating issue was that we waited over 20 minutes for our bill to arrive after asking for it, and the backlog was due to the wait staff having to hand-calculate the tabs! What?! You can't do simple arithmetic? Sad. We finally gave up waiting and left on the table cash for the amount we were able to simply calculate ourselves (plus tip). Perhaps they should have cut their losses and closed instead of trying to accommodate guests while operating with no power.

This place is the best . If you roll into LaConner Wa walk to the end of town and either eat a meal or walk away with a bakery item. Love the food. Love the bakery. Service is wonderful ! It's rare to find quality old time bakery and food. It's a flash back to good ole days.:)

We stopped here during the tulip festival for Lunch. Even though it was packed, they got us in quickly. Service was great, and the food was even better. Its really a great place to go if you are gluten free, nearly everything could be made gluten free without having to give up significant parts of the meal, and they had a wide variety of gluten free baked goods. We will be back here soon!

Lovely little place on the main drag in La Conner. Inside is bustling on weekends (was a perpetual queue for the restrooms when we were there), tables outside seem to have a bit more of a relaxed vibe and a good view of the bridge and water. Great sandwiches and good service. Most importantly, cinnamon rolls the side of a house brick.

Calico is one of my favorite places to visit for a morning breakfast or lunch spot. Whether sitting outside on the deck in the sun or inside this place is busy. Food is always fresh and tasty. Be sure to check out their bakery items, while not cheap they have some great treats!

We had my mother in law in town from Saskatchewan and wanted to enjoy the sights of La Conner and the Tulip Festival. Wanting it to be a special day I did a bit of research prior so that we could enjoy a great lunch and saw that this place was very popular. We initially walked by at around noon and the lineup was out the door, none of us starving we decided to enjoy the shops and sights of La Conner first. We came back at around 2 and the line up still spilled outside. It seemed to move quite quickly and soon an outdoor table was offered to us.... Being a nice enough day we thought "why not?". It was a bit cool (especially when the wind picked up) but he view was great! The servers were attentive and had great recommendations. When the food came the portions were very generous. The food it self was delicious!!! We all enjoyed our meals but I have to say mine was the best. I had the Washington turkey sandwich and my husband who hates fruit on his sandwiches (this one had cranberries) stated it was fabulous. We didn't have room to enjoy dessert but I have to say all the baked goods in the front of the restaurant looked amazing!!!We will defiantly be back!

I ordered a sampler, the shrimp and avocado sandwich, green salad with balsamic vinaigrette, and clam chowder. It must have been an off day, or their food isn't what I expected it to be, full of flavor and fresh tasting. The shrimp was bland and too soft although the avocados seemed fresh. There was some seasoned mayo but not enough to enhance the flavor of the bland, soft shrimp. Mech. Plus, the vinaigrette left me puckered and thirsty for water on the way back home. The only thing I could taste was the red onions in the salad. The clam chowder was super thick and didn't taste of clams and good cream. My husband tasted some kind of lavender taste and we later found out it was thyme. We heard good things about this place so we were very displeased at the food and the service was just all right. The only thing that tasted worth saying good things about was the cherry pastry we bought in the bakery. Finally, something good and flavorful! It wasn't too sweet and the cherries in the jelly were divine.

Had a wonderful Easter brunch after viewing tulips. I had eggs Benedict on a fresh croissant and the eggs were exactly what I ordered. My fiancé had the spinach scramble. We took home a huge cinnamon bun. The dining room was kind of a tight fit. Wait staff very friendly and attentive. This is the second time I've been here and I recommend it highly.

The food is good but the service was terrible. The waitress had to come back to our table twice to ask if our daughter wanted the grilled cheese or Mac n' Cheese. After telling her twice that it was the grilled cheese she had to send someone from the kitchen to ask again. Her excuse was she forgot what a grilled cheese was. Wow! When the food arrived my wife's food wasn't what she ordered. She specifically said no mayo yet the sandwich came with a ton of it and she wasn't given any potato chips. When she asked for the chips the waitress proceeded to go to the kitchen and complain to the other staff that she didn't ask for them even though she never said any such thing (I overheard as I was taking my youngest daughter to the washroom which is literally in the kitchen/food prep area.) When the waitress came back with the chips she was rude. She then proceeded to refill our water and in doing so poured water all over my wife's leg. Nice. All of this aside, the worst part was the fact that none of the girls working there smiled once during our visit. The service industry isn't easy, regardless, if you don't want to do it properly do something else. Years ago when they served pine nut salad and a dill pickle with every sandwich the food was good. Now it's refried potato chips and poor service. Used to be a five star now it's three star and I'm being generous. PS - The Mount Vernon location is WAY better in terms of their service.

This is as good as it gets for breakfast and lunch! I had both! Amazing staff willing to please, the food is to die for! Fabulous breakfast with homemade raspberry jam on best toast ever, yummy omelets and fried red potatoes. Lunch we had a veggie quesadilla-delish!!!! When we sat down waitress ran off a few coffee choices before i glanced at menu so I said i'd take a latte, then flipped open menu and saw something much more yummy and they did back flips to make my latte into the coffee drink I wanted more and boy was it amazing! GORGEOUS views of the channel and boats if you are fortunate enough to eat on the deck on a perfect sunny day as we were. OMG don't skip out on the chocolate silk pie! To DIE for!!!!! BEST restaurant in town!

This place is lovely. We stopped in for breakfast. I had a scone. Husband had a scramble. The chicken apple sausage is really good as is their toast from home made bread. I got a piece of coconut cream pie to go. We ate it later that evening and I thought I might surely die of coconut delight. This was AMAZING coconut cream pie!! Will definitely return. :)

Awesome bakery! I really loved the baked goods. They did tell me that it wasn't made on site but that the owner of the bakery owned the place where it was baked. I ordered this ginormous cream puff with custard and a chocolate covering. It was the size of my face!! And it wasn't expensive at all! Maybe $4....I also ordered this shortbread cookie. I ate it and it was so good that I went back and ordered the rest that I saw on the plate. I also ordered an apple streudel which I cannot attest too...but my dog sure liked it! Too much temptation on the counter to resist I guess....friendly staff and coffee was tasty too...highlight of my trip to La Conner

My boyfriend and both of our moms and I came here when our moms were visiting in town. We had heard great things about La Conner and decided to check it out. We were recommended Calico Cupboard for lunch. We were seated outside on a beautiful sunny day (high 80's in Seattle, but a perfect low 70's in La Conner!). The deck has a nice view of the water and a cool bridge. All of our food was really good. I had the butternut squash quesadilla - not a very cheesey quesadilla, but tons of vegetables and the blue cheese really stands out. My boyfriend had the bacon cheddar burger, which he enjoyed. The BBQ sauce and the kettle chips were both really good! My mom had the roasted vegetables and she had them put salmon on top of it. The salmon was a generous portion and really fresh. My boyfriend's mom had the jewel salad with the gorgonzola balsamic vinaigrette; it came with a ton of various fresh vegetables and was really good as well. The dishes were around $10-12, which seemed reasonable. Both salads came with some flaxseed bread, butter, and raspberry jam, which was amazing. We ended up buying a few containers of jam to take home with us, which at $5 was not badly priced at all for high quality jam. The jam was not overly sweet and tasted like fruit, exactly as it should! All in all, a great stop. Highly recommend for a visit to La Conner.

Use to frequent the Mt.Venon location, but has gone downhill the last year in terms of food quality and preperation. I like the menu options since they offer gluten free items. We were happy we gave the La Conner location a try. It was out of our way, but had two great breakfasts there. Very quaint downtown where this is located. Would make for a nice stroll after eating.

I've been here twice now and have loved it both times. The food is fantastic and the service is friendly and attentive. The shrimp and avocado omelet is to die for, the bread is amazing, the homemade jam is spectacular, and don't get me started on the cookies. Just come and eat here.

We headed to the Calico Cupboard for a late lunch after a walk at Padilla Bay. Our experience was delightful and I was glad we chose a favourite from years gone by, even though we would love to return to La Conner and try some lovely looking newer establishments. We were seated almost immediately. The wait staff were good humoured and efficient, giving us time to browse the extensive menu (breakfast served all day!!) and finagle two antsy children. I had a ham and veggie red potato hash and my sister had the veggie burger, substituting a salad. Both dishes were very tasty and the ingredients were fresh. My sister's salad was really nice, not the traditional tasteless lettuce with a few shreds of carrot and red cabbage to call it a salad. Great mixture of greens and other veggies. She chose a balsamic Gorgonzola dressing. Her burger was impressive. No wannabe meat imitation. It was a pan fried concoction of items you could actually see, like various seeds and chopped nuts. My hash was so, so good. The spinach and feta complemented the ham, eggs, and additional veggies. I'm a flavour and sauce overkill eater, so I doused on some green habanero sauce, salt and pepper. I definitely recommend a visit to this restaurant. P.s. A previous reviewer was aghast when they observed traps on the deck that they believed were killing bees. I'm going to guess they aren't familiar with yellow jackets. The clear traps do not attract bees and the freedom from dozens of yellow jackets crawling around ones food is not to be brushed off. (Ha ha)

We visited on a sunny Saturday morning, and were promptly seated outside on the deck, which was gorgeous. Five minutes later we ordered food. The hostess had told us there were three quiche choices. But when we ordered, the waitress looked skeptical and said "we're supposed to get rid of the salmon one first, but that's fine." Thirty minutes later the food (French toast; quiche; Brussels sprouts hash) was unceremoniously delivered. For twenty of those minutes, my wife's coffee cup sat empty. After eating, there was another long wait for the bill. THEN we waited FOREVER to get our card back. Breakfast took almost an hour and a half! In all of that time, there was no word of apology or explanation. And, really, a hint of acknowledgment would have gone a long way. Especially since they weren't particularly busy--and two of the tables near us just ordered cinnamon rolls. We also witnessed, during our purgatory, one of the waitstaff muttering about some customers who'd moved from shade to sun after asking a different employee. She was clearly peeved. This lack of professional service cancelled out the awesome river setting and the tasty food.

We came up for the whale watching and decided to get up early for breakfast. Found this place on yelp and after checking in with the guide service who also recommended this place we arrived. Service is extremely nice (you check yourself in and they go down the list no matter where you're sitting so no cutting the line). The French Toast was excellent, and the ham was spectacular. My wife's scramble was huge and very tasty. We ordered the cinnamon roll and raspberry cinnamon roll to go. Carbo loading for a 6 hour tour. I'd give the food here 10 stars and we're both food snobs. My only complaint and it's minor and realize where I'm at - maple syrup isn't the real stuff but I grew up near Vermont so I'm spoiled. Still 10 stars.

We were so happy to find a parking spot then walked right in. Apparently no one wanted to sit at the counter. We thought those were the best seats because you could watch everyone walk and drive by. Service was quick but we were undecided. It took a while for our server to return. Water was served in canning jars. We ordered a seasonal cream cheese berry Danish pastry while we waited for our Italian sausage scramble. Originally I had wanted to take this pastry home. After the first bite, this was not going to happen. Moist and drizzled with cream cheese icing. Delicious berry preserves. Rich buttery flaky dough that turned into a sinful delight. Latte was OK. Italian sausage & cheese scramble: spicy Italian sausage, green peppers, onion, tomatoes, olives and mozzarella cheese. Country style potatoes: generous portion. This was adequate but not a wow for me. Served with buttered toast with more preserves. Will be back for their baked goods. There is outside seating which overlooks the water.

My wife and I dined here the other day for our first visit. I would give then 5 stars if not for something that drove us a bit crazy. First, the food was fantastic with many choices for us vegans. The waitstaff was very pleasant and the back deck seating, on this beautiful day was delightful, except for the thing that drove us crazy. Everywhere you looked, and it was almost impossible to avoid, were these see through devices which trapped bees and killed them. It was disgusting and disturbing watching these bees get poisoned and drowned. Is this really want you want to watch as you are eating? And to the owners, have you not heard of the massive die off of bees worldwide that may adversely effect crop production? As much as we would like to re-visit this restaurant, I hesitate and will never again sit on their outside deck.

We had the breakfast quesadilla and the hotcakes. Wow. The best breakfast ever!! We'll definitely make this a regular place. Service was friendly and efficient. Lovely setting. Kaylin was awesome. Even filled our water bottles for us!!

Food is ok... I've had a lot of different things there and nothing made me say I want to come back and eat this... They have a lot of healthy options which is nice... The only thing I can rave about is the cinnamon rolls and peanut butter chocolate bars. YUMMM! The wait time is always super horrid and the staff is rude about it usually. You walk in and sign in but it you don't do it properly they bite your head off! Overall menus could use updating in flavor a and technique and staff needs to be kinder.
